My Approach to Brand Design | Define, Design, Deliver

Define.
Design.
Deliver.

Strong brands rarely happen by accident.

They emerge when strategic thinking, creative development and implementation work together. That’s why every project follows a simple three-stage framework: Define, Design and Deliver.

Define

Before creating anything, it’s important to understand what we’re trying to achieve and why. This stage focuses on building clarity and creating the foundations for better creative decisions.

What we’ll do
We’ll define a creative brief, establish objectives and identify what success looks like.

We’ll also explore your business, your customers, your competitors and your market to understand the context your brand operates within.

How we’ll do it
Creative brief
Together we’ll define where you are today, where you’d like to be, and the deliverables required to get there.

Customer journey
We’ll explore how customers discover, experience and interact with your business, identifying key touchpoints and opportunities along the way.

Brand health check
We’ll take a broad view of your existing brand across both digital and print communications, identifying strengths, weaknesses, gaps and opportunities.

Competitor assessment
We’ll review your competitors to understand how they position themselves and identify opportunities to differentiate.

Industry trends
We’ll examine your industry, common conventions and recurring clichés to understand where familiarity helps and where originality can create advantage.

Design

Once direction is clear, design can work harder.

This stage is about translating strategy into a visual identity that people can recognise, understand and remember.

Stage One
Initial Concepts

This is where exploration begins.

I’ll develop a minimum of three creative routes that respond to the brief and strategic direction established during the Define stage.

Each route will offer a different interpretation of the challenge, giving us space to discuss, evaluate and refine the strongest ideas.
Stage Two
Concept Development

We’ll select the most promising direction and develop it further.

Using your feedback, we’ll build confidence in the chosen route, strengthening the concept and expanding the system around it.
Stage Three
Design Refinement

Once the direction is agreed, we’ll focus on refinement.

This stage is about polish, consistency and attention to detail, preparing the work for final approval and implementation.

Deliver

Brands don’t live in presentations. They live in the real world.

The final stage focuses on implementation and ensuring the work can be used consistently and confidently.

Approval and artwork
Once approved, all artwork will be prepared and supplied in the required formats.

Depending on the project, this may include identity assets, brand guidelines, templates, marketing collateral or digital deliverables.

The objective is simple: to ensure the brand is not only well designed, but usable, practical and ready for deployment.

No two projects or clients are ever the same, but this approach creates clarity, direction and momentum throughout.
I’m a brand designer and consultant based in South London.
If you feel we’d be a good fit – I’d love to hear from you.
